It is not the same for those women working in rooms and for those who are free to do what they wish at the end of the day; it is among them that one finds dissipation and hardship. In general, paid by the day or the piece, they earn wages sufficient for subsistence; the difficult position into which they too often fall must be attributed to their lack of thrift and their disorderly conduct.71
